In partnership with KnowBe4, we are providing the Phish Alert Button or PAB as a quick and easy way to report suspected phishing emails. You play an important role in protecting the Saint Peter’s University community from cybercriminals. Reporting suspicious emails using the PAB helps us identify threats more quickly and prevent unauthorized actions against our systems and your data.
How to Use the Phish Alert Button (PAB) in Gmail
Locate the PAB icon
When accessing your Gmail account via the web browser the Phish Alert Button (PAB) appears as an orange fish hook icon in the right-hand panel. It is possible the right-hand panel may be hidden. To unhide it, click the small left-facing arrow (chevron) located at the very bottom right corner of the screen as shown below.

Open the email
Open the suspicious email being careful not to click on any links in the email or open any attachments. Look for orange fish hook icon in the right-hand panel as shown below:

Report the email
Click the fish hook icon, then click the blue Phish Alert button.
What happens next
The email is moved to your Trash (Deleted Items), and a report is automatically sent to the IT team for review and resolution.
Simulated phishing
Occasionally, you may receive a confirmation letting you know that the message you reported was a simulated phishing email. Nice catch! Reporting these messages helps Saint Peter’s University meet cybersecurity compliance requirements and strengthen campus security. Thank you for doing your part to keep us cyber safe.
How to Use the Phish Alert Button (PAB) on Mobile (Gmail App)
Steps:
- Open the suspicious email in the Gmail app.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the message, or scroll to the bottom of the email and look for the fish hook icon next to Available Add-ons.
- Select Phish Alert, then tap the Phish Alert button to submit the report.
How to reporting phishing from other email clients or apps
The Phish Alert Button is only available in the Gmail web browser interface or the official Gmail mobile app on ios or Android. If you are using another email client or app (such as Apple Mail or Outlook), the button will not appear. In those cases, please follow these alternate instructions:
Steps:
- Forward suspicious message to phishing@saintpeters.edu only, do not forward to any other email addresses. This will alert IT to review and act on the message.
- Delete the email
- OR from your web browser once you are back at your computer use the PAB as instructed above.
