How To Set Name Pronunciation In Blackboard

Blackboard's Name Pronunciation feature allows all users (students, faculty or staff) to type out how they would prefer their displayed name to be pronounced and record audio, which appears alongside their Blackboard Avatar on Discussion Forum postings, Groups, Class rosters, and in Grading areas. This article provides steps for users to enable this feature, and shows where it displays for both faculty and for students.

What this is: A "pronunciation" text field has been added to Blackboard personal settings, and all users can use this field to type out and record audio of how they want their name to be pronounced. NOTE: This needs to be set up by each user only one time in their Blackboard profile, and once they do this, it will appear in all of the classes they are teaching/taking.

How To Set This Up (for Students, Faculty and Staff using Blackboard) On A Computer:

Log into your Blackboard account and, on the left menu, click on your profile (the area that has your name) and it will expand.

You can also click "Record name pronunciation" icon to record audio up to 20 seconds. Once you click this, the bar will turn purple, and it will count down. Once the countdown begins, you can start recording audio. Once it's done, you can click "play name pronunciation" to play back the audio you have recorded. or click the X icon on the right side to delete it and re-record.

When you're finished, make sure to click 'Done" art the bottom to save this.

Where This Will Appear:

If you are an instructor (faculty), you can also go to the course roster on the left menu in a course you are teaching (Control Panel > Users & Groups > Users) and click on the avatar thumbnail to see this information for your students if they have set it:
