Updates To Blackboard Assignment Submissions (6/1/23)

On June 1, 2023, Blackboard issued a release (v3900.67.0) which contains an update to the look and feel of the area within an Assignment Submission on Blackboard for students. This article explores the new layout of this functionality.

Students submitting an Assignment in Original Course View have several possible actions. They can upload files, author a submission (insert text, links and images), and attach a note to their instructor (comments). Previously, these actions could be confusing for students, as the option to add comments was always displayed, and the option to author a submission required selecting a button that was easy to miss.

The old layout of the student Assignment Submission page. Starting with the June 1, 2023 update, Blackboard has redesigned the Assignment submission page to be less confusing and easier for students to use.
The new student Assignment submission page has three sections: Instructions, Submission, and Assignment information. Each section can be opened independently, and students can open more than one section at a time. The page will retain added content when a student closes a section. Once a student has added content to the section(s) they want to use, they can click the Save Draft button at the bottom to save the data and complete the submission later, or click Submit to complete their submission, sending it to their Instructor to review and grade.
Clicking the Create Submission link will open a text section allowing students to type out text, or paste in text, links and images.
Clicking the Upload Files section will allow students to select one or more files from their device to upload.
Clicking the Add Comments section will allow students to type in comments for their instructor.
